A hand-painted kitchen can completely transform the look of your home without the expense or disruption of replacing the entire kitchen. At RM Décor Solutions, we specialise in professionally hand-painting shaker-style MDF and timber kitchen cabinets throughout Essex and London, creating a durable, elegant finish designed to last.
The key to a beautiful hand-painted kitchen is not just the final coat of paint, it’s the preparation, materials, and technique used at every stage. With over 40 years of decorating experience, we follow a proven process to ensure every kitchen we paint looks exceptional and stands up to daily use.
Step 1: Careful Preparation
Preparation is the most important part of any kitchen painting project. Kitchen cabinets naturally collect grease, cooking residue, and everyday grime, so surfaces must be properly cleaned before any paint is applied.
We begin by removing all handles and knobs, ensuring a clean and uninterrupted finish. Surfaces are then thoroughly degreased using sugar soap before being lightly sanded with fine abrasive paper (around 180-grit). This creates a slightly keyed surface that allows the primer and paint to bond properly.
Where possible, doors and drawers are removed and painted separately to achieve the most consistent finish, while fixed cabinetry is carefully masked and painted in place.
Step 2: Priming MDF and Timber
Once the surfaces are prepared, we apply a high-quality adhesion primer. This step is particularly important for materials such as MDF and timber, which can be porous and prone to issues like tannin bleed.
Depending on the surface condition, we apply one or two coats of professional-grade primer, such as Zinsser B-I-N or Dulux Trade primers. Each coat is allowed to dry fully before being lightly sanded with fine paper (around 220-grit) to ensure a perfectly smooth base for the finishing coats.
Proper priming helps prevent staining, improves durability, and ensures the final colour appears rich and even.
Step 3: Applying the Paint Finish
To achieve a professional hand-painted finish, we apply multiple thin coats of premium trade-quality paint in the colour of your choice.
Typically, this involves two undercoats followed by a durable eggshell or satin finish. Paint is carefully applied using a high-quality roller and then “laid off” with a brush to achieve a smooth, traditional hand-painted appearance without visible roller marks.
Each coat is allowed to dry properly before the next is applied, with a light sanding between coats to maintain a flawless surface.
Step 4: Drying, Reassembly and Final Finish
Once painting is complete, all doors, drawers, and hardware are carefully reinstalled. Although the paint will be dry to the touch within hours, full curing takes around 7–10 days, allowing the finish to reach its maximum durability.
During this time, we advise treating surfaces gently to allow the paint to harden fully.
The result is a beautifully refreshed kitchen that feels completely transformed — often at a fraction of the cost of a full kitchen replacement.
