Refinishing Furniture

Refinishing a table can breathe new life into an old piece of furniture. Here’s a basic guide to refinishing a table in five steps:

Preparation:

  1. Start by working in a well-ventilated area, preferably outdoors.
  2. Remove any existing finish or paint using sandpaper, a chemical stripper, or a heat gun, depending on the type of finish.
  3. Once the old finish is removed, sand the entire surface of the table to create a smooth, even surface. Start with a coarse grit sandpaper (around 80-100 grit) to remove imperfections and old finish, then move to finer grits (150-220) for a smoother finish.

Cleaning:

  1. After sanding, wipe down the table with a damp cloth to remove any dust and debris.
  2. Allow the table to dry completely before proceeding.

Staining or Painting (Optional):

  1. If you want to change the colour of the table, now is the time to apply stain or paint.
  2. Apply the stain or paint evenly using a brush or a cloth, following the grain of the wood.
  3. Allow the stain or paint to dry completely according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Finishing:

  1. Once the stain or paint has dried, apply a clear finish to protect the surface of the table.
  2. Choose a finish based on the desired level of sheen and durability, such as polyurethane, varnish, or lacquer.
  3. Apply the finish in thin, even coats using a brush or a sprayer, following the manufacturer’s instructions for drying time and application technique.
  4. Sand lightly between coats with fine-grit sandpaper (220-400 grit) to remove any imperfections and ensure a smooth finish.
  5. Apply multiple coats of finish until you achieve the desired level of protection and sheen.

Curing:

  1. Allow the final coat of finish to cure completely before using the table. This typically takes several days to a week, depending on the type of finish used and environmental conditions.
  2. Once the finish is fully cured, carefully inspect the table for any imperfections or rough spots. Sand lightly if necessary, then wipe down the surface with a clean, damp cloth to remove any dust.
  3. Your refinished table is now ready to use and enjoy!

Remember to follow all safety precautions when refinishing furniture, including wearing protective eyewear, gloves, and a mask to avoid inhaling fumes or getting chemicals on your skin.
